What is bass music? A Copenhagen listener's guide

"Bass music" is an umbrella term for a family of electronic genres built around low-frequency weight and sound-system culture. If you've been to an elevate night in Copenhagen and wondered what to call the thing rattling your chest, this is the short version.

The core genres

• Dubstep — Half-time drums around 140 BPM with a heavy emphasis on sub-bass and the "wobble" of modulated low end. Born in South London in the early 2000s.
• Drum & bass (D&B) — Fast breakbeats at 170–175 BPM over deep basslines. Ranges from liquid and soulful to dark and rolling.
• UK garage & 2-step — Swung, syncopated drums around 130 BPM with a bright, clubby feel and chopped vocals.
• Riddim & tearout — The heavier, more aggressive end of dubstep, built for big sound systems and bigger drops.

Why the sound system matters

Bass music is a physical genre — much of it lives below the range of laptop speakers and earbuds. That's why the venue and rig matter as much as the lineup. A proper sub-heavy system in an intimate room (the kind we chase for elevate events) is where these genres actually make sense.
